About Kidney Disease

A complete healing world. Here you will find everything that can nurture your body, mind and soul.
We at Keraliya Ayurvedic Panchkarma Centre (Kidney Care Unit) consider each patient to be unique and treat them based on their symptoms and condition. Meeting with a doctor is not essential if you fill up our online assessment form.

The mainstream treatment for the final stage of kidney disease is either dialysis or transplant. Dialysis could be quite expensive. This is an ongoing procedure that needs to be performed three times a week. In some cases it could be quite uncomfortable and causes many other symptoms.
Transplant is usually the next step after dialysis. This option is dependent on finding the right donor and could cost quite a sum of money. Kidney transplant comes with its own challenges. Patients are usually put on heavy immunosuppressive drugs resulting in other complications. Kidney transplant can last from weeks to in some cases to years.

A natural treatment offers a multi-prong approach to the kidney disease.

Medicine: Herbal medicine is provided to rejuvenate the kidneys so that they may start to work on their own eliminating or reducing the frequency of dialysis.

Diet: An appropriate diet is suggested to reduce the load on kidneys so that they are not working too hard to eliminate the waste from the body. A fine balance need to be found by each patient so that the diet is easier on kidneys and also the essential nutrients are there to keep balanced body chemistry. This approach allows the kidneys to repair and recover.

Yoga: It is believed that kidneys are associated with the second chakra and the element associated with kidneys is water. It is helpful to do some moderate yoga (permitting the physical condition of the patient) to have the blood flow running to the kidneys so that they can repair faster. A sound mind and positive thoughts are very much part of the natural treatment.

Role of Prescribed Medicine (Allopathic Medicine): Kidney disease is quite a complex disease and comes with many other symptoms. The prime purpose of the herbal medicine is to rejuvenate and repair the kidneys. While this is happening, it is utterly important to keep all other issues in check. For example, continue your prescribed medicine for blood pressure, diabetes, water retention, low calcium, high potassium or phosphorus, low HB or any other related issue.

Panchakarma Therapy: Classical Panchakarma therapy and Kerala specialties give good results in kidney disorders.

  • Lower Creatinine Level
  • Lower Urea Level
  • Improvement in GFR
  • Improvement in Appetite
  • Better skin and hair texture
  • Overall feeling of healthiness
We have had patients in the early stages of kidney disease noticing results within 4 weeks however the chronic end stage patients may have to wait 6 to 8 weeks to notice any significant results.
  • Stage 1 to Stage 4 has the highest recovery rate. Results can be noticed within a few weeks.
  • Stage 5 where the patient is on dialysis for less than 2 years.
  • Patient still urinates
  • Other electrolytes are under control
  • No other major complications

The purpose of our medicine is to rejuvenate the kidney cells so that they may start to work on their own eliminating the need for dialysis or transplant. You will still need to continue your prescribed allopathic medicine to address any other issues e.g. blood pressure, diabetes, hemoglobin, potassium, calcium, phosphorus etc. As we review your reports we may suggest any change in the current medication.

We use herbal-based Ayurvedic medicines which are safe.

No side effects have been reported as a result of taking this medicine.

It varies from patient to patient. Some patients need to take the medicine for several months, while others will take the medicine for years. Once the kidneys starts to recover and is confirmed via reports, the potency and quantity of the medicine is reduced and eventually stopped. We encourage our patients to keep having their regular blood tests to keep a close eye on the kidneys.

You may have to reduce your protein intake. Other dietary recommendations will be based on your individual condition.

We advise our patients to have a regular check-up before starting their medication and to keep a copy of their results. We recommend a follow-up check-up after taking the medication.

Regular check-ups with a qualified physician are essential in identifying the onset of kidney disease.

Your check-up should include :

  1. A test of protein levels in your urine. Healthy kidneys filter protein out of the urine. If your kidneys are damaged protein can leak into the urine, indicating the onset of kidney disease.
  2. A blood test for Creatinine. Creatinine is a waste product produced from normal muscle activity. It’s removed from the blood by the kidneys, but if your kidneys are damaged, your blood will show very high levels of Creatinine. The levels of Creatinine in the blood can be used to calculate glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
  3. An ultrasound or CT scan. The ultrasound or CT scan obtains an image of the kidneys and urinary tract and determines if there is a kidney tumor, stone or other physical anomaly affecting the kidneys and urinary tract.
  4. A kidney biopsy. A kidney biopsy identifies the type of kidney disease present; the degree of damage to the kidneys can further suggest the best course of treatment.

You should visit your doctor or clinic for regular checkups and tests for CKD. You should also ask your doctor what you can do to lower your chances of getting kidney disease.

Your doctor may tell you to :

  • Carefully follow prescribed treatments to control diabetes, high blood pressure, or both.
  • Lose excess weight by following a healthy diet and regular exercise program.
  • Stop smoking if you are a smoker.
  • Avoid taking large amounts of over-the-counter pain relievers, called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
  • Make some changes in your diet, such as eating less salt and less protein.
  • Limit your intake of beer, wine and liquor.
